Dances With Wolves: A Movie Review

Standard

Roped into watching this movie by my fiance, who has really been trying to get me to watch it for years, I must say I am very surprised by how much I liked it. I don’t know what drove me to think I wouldn’t. Maybe it was Kevin Costner on the front cover dressed in his army garb in front of a prairie background that scared me away.

Dances with Wolves tells the story of Lieutenant Dunbar’s (Kevin Costner) attempts in friending a group of Native Americans after being sent to an army camp site alone for several months. Through hand gestures the Native Americans and Dunbar end up creating a friendship that grows into a bond.

The movie focuses on how Americans invaded the Native American camps and took over. Personally, I thought the beginning was very slow, but after Dunbar starts to speak with the Native Americans the movie becomes much more interesting. It’s definitely an educational movie that shows how and why Native Americans acted the way they did.

The only other draw back is that the movie is close to 4 hours long. However, if you don’t feel like sitting through a 4 hour movie, we broke it up into 3 parts and watched it over 3 days, which worked a lot better. Once it starts getting interesting, it’s easier to sit through, but, for me, the beginning was brutal to sit through.
